Cotyledon orbiculata v. Oophylla

Cotyledon orbiculata

The silver-leafed succulent with flowers of fire

In the diverse world of succulents, Cotyledon orbiculata stands out for its rustic elegance and spectacular blooms. Native to South Africa, this succulent is a true collector’s gem, appreciated by both novices and experienced growers alike.

Characteristics

Cotyledon orbiculata presents as a succulent shrub, which in nature can reach up to a meter in height. Its most iconic feature are the fleshy, flat, and rounded leaves, often with a delicately reddened margin. The surface is covered with a white-silvery pruina, a waxy coating that protects the plant from intense sun and gives it that fascinating grey-green color. The leaves are opposite and form a very pleasing symmetry.

Cultivation and care

Light

It loves full sun or partial shade. Good lighting enhances the leaf colors and promotes abundant flowering. In regions with very hot summers, it’s best to protect it from the strongest midday sun.

Soil

The soil must be extremely well-draining. Use a cactus mix, enriched with pumice or perlite. Waterlogging is its worst enemy.

Watering

Follow the golden rule for succulents: water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. In summer, watering will be more regular; in winter, it should be almost completely suspended, especially if the plant is kept in cooler conditions.

Flowers

Flowering is its magical moment. In late spring or summer, long stalks rise from the tips of the stems, bearing numerous pendulous, bell-shaped flowers. Colors range from bright orange to coral red, sometimes with delicate yellow striations. The nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for pollinating birds in their native regions.

The Cotyledon orbiculata ‘Oophylla’ Variety

Among the many cultivars, ‘Oophylla’ (sometimes called “egg-shaped”) is particularly beloved. It is a round-leaved succulent thanks to its fleshy and round leaves, with a small point at the tip; they are completely smooth and covered in pruina. It’s an attractive silver-green succulent that in winter gifts you with beautiful orange, bell-shaped flowers with soft yellow striations. Its compact, geometric shape makes it perfect for potted arrangements.
