The rare Japanese “Pineapple Cactus”

Euphorbia Sotetsu Kirin is a fascinating and rare Japanese hybrid, nicknamed the “Pineapple Cactus” for its striking resemblance to the exotic fruit. It features an emerald‑green cylindrical stem covered in symmetrical conical tubercles, topped with a dense tuft of leaves. An eccentric rarity, very easy to care for and perfect for a tropical vibe.

This outstanding succulent was born in Japanese nurseries from a targeted cross between the rare Euphorbia bupleurifolia and the generous Euphorbia mammillaris.

Growing notes:

• Exposure: bright light, but avoid direct sun during the hottest hours (filtered or morning light is best). Indoors, place near a sunny window.
• Watering: moderate in spring‑summer, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to almost none.
• Soil type: well‑draining and porous – ideal is a cactus mix with coarse sand or pumice (slightly acidic to neutral pH).
• Fertilizing: once a month from April to September with a low‑nitrogen, potassium‑rich succulent fertilizer.
• Flowers: produces small yellowish‑green cyathia at the apex in late spring, if grown well.
• Fun fact: the name “Sotetsu” refers to a Japanese cycad, due to the leaf tuft’s resemblance. Caution: the white latex is toxic – handle with gloves.
