Astrophytum myriostigma Fukuryu Hakuun Ø 15

A collectible Japanese botanical masterpiece, combining two of the most fascinating mutations of the species. This globular cactus, completely spineless, features the Fukuryu mutation (extra ribs, ridges, and unique bumps) combined with the Hakuun mutation (white woolly patches resembling clouds on the plant’s body). Each specimen is a one-of-a-kind piece, a true gem for the most demanding collectors. Unusual, bizarre, and geometric in appearance.

Exposure: thrives in bright light but avoid direct sun during the hottest hours; prefers very luminous and airy spots, with some morning or evening sun.

Soil: needs a well-draining, mineral substrate – ideally a cactus mix with added pumice, lapilli, or coarse sand (at least 50–60% inert material).

Watering: water only when the substrate is completely dry; in summer every 7–10 days, reduce in autumn, and almost stop in winter, strictly avoiding waterlogging which causes root rot.

Fertilizing: from spring to late summer, apply a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer diluted to half strength every 3–4 weeks.

Flowers: in spring–summer, under optimal conditions, it produces large bright yellow flowers with an orange-red base, fragrant but short-lived (2–3 days).

Fun facts: “Hakuun” means “white clouds” in Japanese, while “Fukuryu” refers to irregular bumps. In the wild, this species grows on calcareous, very poor soils, developing a dense, shallow root system. It is a slow-growing plant, but each specimen is truly unique in the arrangement of its spots and ribs.
