It catches the eye with its extraordinary spiral growth, defying nature’s classical geometry. Each column twists upon itself, creating a unique effect that changes perspective from every angle. The direction and intensity of the spiral vary from specimen to specimen, making your plant one of a kind.

Over the years and with maturity, the plant takes on a branched candelabra habit and can reward you with spectacular large nocturnal blooms in shades of white and pink. The fragrant flowers open at dusk and last only one night, attracting night pollinators such as moths and bats.

Exposure: thrives in bright light, preferably direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. In summer it can be placed outdoors, but protect it from the harshest midday sun to prevent scorching. In winter, keep it in a bright, cool spot (minimum 5-10 °C).

Watering: water only when the soil is completely dry. In spring/summer, once every 7–10 days; in autumn/winter, reduce to once a month or even less. It absolutely hates waterlogging, which causes root rot.

Soil type: use a well-draining substrate, specifically for cacti and succulents, with added coarse sand or perlite (about 30–40%) to improve drainage.

Fertilizing: from April to September, apply a liquid cactus fertilizer, low in nitrogen and rich in potassium and phosphorus, once every 3–4 weeks. Stop completely in autumn and winter.

Blooming: the plant does flower, but only when it reaches a certain maturity (over one meter tall) and under optimal conditions. The night-blooming flowers, up to 15–20 cm across, appear in late spring/early summer.

Curiosities: the spiral shape is a natural mutation (not genetically stable) that makes each specimen unique. In the wild, this cactus grows in South America (Peru, Bolivia) and is nicknamed the “twisted cactus.” The direction of the spiral (clockwise or counterclockwise) is unpredictable and does not depend on sun exposure.

Tip: rotate the pot occasionally to ensure even growth, but avoid moving it abruptly during blooming to prevent bud drop.
