Presented in a refined terracotta pot Ø 14 cm from our Manera Line, this extraordinary Leuchtenbergia principis is a true masterpiece of botanical adaptation. Its sculptural habit and geometric shape, which surprisingly resemble a small Agave, make it immediately recognisable and highly prized by collectors worldwide.

Botanical and morphological notes
Each tubercle is crowned with flat, flexible spines that are completely harmless to the touch, perfectly mimicking the dry leaves of the surrounding vegetation – an ingenious mimetic strategy honed in the arid deserts of Mexico, its native land. In summer, the plant turns into a sensory spectacle, producing large, bright yellow, intensely fragrant flowers.

Exposure
It thrives in bright light, preferably direct sunlight for a few hours a day, but also tolerates partial shade. Indoors, place it near a south- or southwest-facing window. Outdoors, it enjoys full sun, with gradual acclimatisation to prevent sunburn.

Watering
During spring and summer, water only when the substrate is completely dry (about every 7–10 days). In autumn and winter, suspend watering almost entirely, limiting yourself to a light misting every 3–4 weeks. Caution: waterlogging is the primary cause of root rot.

Soil type
Use a well-draining mix for succulents and cacti: 50% universal potting soil, 30% coarse sand or perlite, and 20% pumice or fine gravel. The ideal pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0).

Fertilising
From April to September, apply a liquid cactus fertiliser with low nitrogen and high potassium and phosphorus, diluted to half strength, once a month. Stop completely in autumn and winter.

Flowering
It blooms profusely in high summer (July–August). The flowers, bright yellow and highly fragrant, appear at the tips of the most mature tubercles and last about 3–5 days each. The plant may re-bloom several times in the same season under optimal conditions.

Curiosities
The name “principis” derives from the Latin “princeps”, meaning “prince”, in homage to its majesty. In the wild, it often grows in association with thorny shrubs that protect it from predators. It is a long-lived, slow-growing species: it can live over 50 years and reach 60–70 cm in height.

Easy to care for, it only needs plenty of light and careful watering, absolutely avoiding water stagnation. A presence that combines rarity, aesthetics, and primal charm, perfect for those seeking beauty and personality in every corner of the home.
