Stenocereus beneckei Ø 14
Stenocereus beneckei supplied in an elegant terracotta pot Ø 14 cm, from our Manera Line. A Mexican columnar cactus known for its stem covered in a dense white waxy powder called pruina. This coating provides natural protection against intense sunlight and helps reflect heat. The white pruina is extremely delicate. If touched or rubbed with fingers, it comes off and does not regenerate on old tissues, revealing the green stem underneath. Handle the plant only by the base of the pot or by touching the very few spines with extreme caution.
Exposure: full sun or very bright light.
Watering: regular in summer (allow soil to dry out between waterings), almost completely stop in winter.
Soil type: very well-draining, with coarse sand, pumice, or volcanic grit.
Fertilizing: once a month in spring/summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
Flowering: blooms in spring/summer (rarely when young in cultivation); nocturnal flowers, pinkish-white or greenish, fragrant.
Curiosities: the white pruina is a distinctive and highly sought-after feature; in Mexico its berries are edible and sweet (called local “pitaya”).
