The tropical mini-tree with a sculptural trunk

A stunning tropical succulent for collectors, renowned for its sculptural stem and its large, bright green leaves with red‑orange veins. In spring and summer, it produces an extraordinary bloom, with small flowers at the tips wrapped in brilliant fiery red. As it grows and sheds its lower leaves, the trunk reveals characteristic whitish elliptical scars left by the foliage, gradually turning into a small tree‑like specimen. Native to the dry forests and limestone rock formations of Madagascar.

Exposure: enjoys bright light but not direct sun during the hottest hours. Place it in a very luminous spot, with filtered sunlight or morning sun only. In full summer sun, the leaves may scorch, so light shade is advisable in the middle of the day.

Watering: during the growing season (spring–summer), water moderately, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. In autumn, gradually reduce watering; in winter, during dormancy, water only occasionally to prevent the soil from drying out completely.

Soil type: needs a very well‑draining substrate low in organic matter. An ideal mix for succulents with coarse sand, pumice, and a little limestone grit will remind it of its native rocky environment.

Fertilising: from April to September, apply a low‑nitrogen fertiliser for succulents, diluted to half strength, every 3‑4 weeks. Cease in autumn and winter.

Flowering: the spring‑summer flowering is a real spectacle: the cyathia (typical Euphorbia inflorescences) are a blazing red that contrasts beautifully with the green leaves. To encourage abundant blooms, ensure a cool, dry winter rest period.

Did you know? Like many Euphorbias, the milky sap that oozes from cuts is toxic and irritating to skin and mucous membranes. Handle with gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after pruning. In the wild, it can grow over 2 metres tall, but in pots it remains more compact – ideal for indoor or greenhouse cultivation.

Of moderate difficulty, this plant rewards with its exotic beauty. Watch out for temperature fluctuations and waterlogging: with just a few simple care steps, it will become the jewel of your collection.
