A succulent plant native to Madagascar, highly prized as an ornamental for its exotic appearance and its bright flowers.
- Appearance: it is a small succulent shrub or bush that can reach a height between 60 cm and 1.5 metres. The stem, generally unbranched and green in colour, has a columnar shape with 5 or 6 angled ribs and robust whitish spines. The leaves are simple, oval-shaped, bright green, but the plant loses them during the winter resting period.
- Flowers: the inflorescence is one of its most distinctive features. It consists of bright red or orange bracts that surround the actual flowers, creating a very striking contrast. Flowering can occur at various times of the year.
- Cultivation: it is a relatively easy plant to grow. It prefers semi-shaded positions and well-drained soil. It tolerates drought well and needs moderate watering, to be reduced almost completely in winter. Caution: like many euphorbias, it is toxic if ingested and its latex can be irritating.
