Ariocarpus fissuratus Ø 17

Ariocarpus fissuratus is one of the most iconic, rare, and sought-after cacti among collectors worldwide. This extraordinary “fossil” plant is spineless and grows at ground level, perfectly mimicking the cracked rocks and dried mud of its natural habitat. Characterized by deeply furrowed and wrinkled geometric tubercles, it surprises in autumn with a spectacular bloom, producing large silky magenta flowers that emerge from its woolly centre. Like other members of the genus, it develops a massive underground taproot that acts as a true water reservoir during the months of extreme drought. A true masterpiece of evolutionary adaptation.

Cultivation notes:

• Exposure: full sun or intense brightness, with some protection from the strongest rays during the hottest summer hours.
• Watering: very scarce and infrequent; water only when the substrate is completely dry, and almost suspend watering in winter.
• Soil: well-draining and mineral-based, mainly consisting of pumice, lapilli, and coarse sand, low in organic matter.
• Fertilization: light and occasional, only in spring-summer, with a specific cactus fertilizer low in nitrogen.
• Flowers: appear in autumn, bright magenta in colour, with silky, shiny petals emerging from the plant’s woolly centre.

Ariocarpus fissuratus is a species included in the CITES certificate list of cultivated plants from Cactusmania, in accordance with the regulations for the protection of endangered species.
