The crested form of Ariocarpus trigonus represents one of the ultimate aspirations for any enthusiast of rare succulents. This extraordinary form is not a separate species, but the result of an extremely rare spontaneous mutation, in which the apical growing point multiplies in a linear rather than circular manner. The result is a sinuous, compact, and undulating development. In this crested form, the characteristic triangular and rigid tubercles of Ariocarpus trigonus compress and fuse along the crest line, creating a dense texture with green or grey hues. Lacking traditional spines, the specimen develops a thick, soft white downy fuzz along the entire crest ridge, from which, in mature plants, delicate creamy-yellow silky flowers may emerge in autumn. Ariocarpus trigonus is a species included in the CITES certificate list of cultivated plants from Cactusmania, in accordance with regulations for the protection of endangered species.
