Bowiea volubilis Ø 17 cm
Bowiea volubilis, one of the most extravagant, unusual and fascinating houseplants in the world’s botanical landscape. Much loved by collectors of rarities and caudiciform plants, this species completely breaks traditional aesthetic rules, combining the solid structure of a large bulb with a light, airy vegetation.
The true heart of the plant is its majestic, spherical, fleshy bulb, an elegant pale green or jade green, growing above ground level. The bulb is protected by outer papery scales that naturally peel away, giving it an ancient look. Its leafless, airy vegetation consists of thin, bright green photosynthetic stems that form a geometric cloud, from which tiny star‑shaped greenish‑yellow flowers bloom.
Growing notes:
- Light: bright, with direct sun only during the coolest hours (morning or late afternoon). Avoid scorching summer sun.
- Watering: moderate during the growing season (spring‑summer), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, water very sparingly.
- Soil type: very well‑draining, ideal for cacti: mix of universal potting soil, coarse sand and pumice or perlite.
- Fertilizing: once a month in spring/summer with a low‑nitrogen succulent fertiliser.
- Caution: hates waterlogging, the main cause of root rot.
It requires little care, loves light and fears stagnant moisture. Perfect for caudiciform collectors and lovers of rare plants.
