Brachychiton rupestris (Queensland bottle tree) large caudex Ø 30

One of the most bizarre and fascinating trees on the planet. In young specimens, the trunk is initially slender, but within a few years it begins to swell noticeably in the lower part. This swelling (the caudex) acts as a true water reservoir. The leaves change shape with age: deeply lobed and divided in young plants, they tend to become lanceolate and entire in mature specimens. Perfect for container growing as a sculptural specimen or a majestic bonsai. A long-lived, hardy plant with a striking visual impact.

Growing notes:

• Exposure: full sun, even several hours a day; tolerates very bright and hot positions.
• Watering: sparse and spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce almost to none.
• Soil: well-draining and poor, ideally a succulent mix with coarse sand, pumice, and a small amount of all-purpose potting soil.
• Fertilizing: light, once a month in spring-summer, with a balanced fertilizer low in nitrogen.
• Winter rest: keep dry and cool (preferably above 5 °C if possible) to encourage flowering and caudex health.
