Echeveria ‘Raindrops’ Ø 14
A true icon among succulents, this variety is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for its striking originality and sculptural presence. Its compact rosettes, with an almost perfect geometry, display a delicate glaucous-blue colour, protected by a light epicuticular bloom that acts as a natural barrier against excessive solar radiation and dehydration.
The hallmark that makes Raindrops unmistakable is the globular, three-dimensional bump at the centre of each leaf – a tissue formation that closely resembles a crystallised raindrop. Under intense light, both these raised areas and the leaf margins take on vibrant pink to ruby-red hues, creating a chromatic contrast of remarkable intensity.
Growing notes
- Light: thrives in bright light, including direct sun during the milder hours; insufficient light causes colours to fade and the plant to stretch (etiolation).
- Watering: water only when the substrate is completely dry, typically every 7–10 days in summer, and very sparingly in winter. Avoid waterlogging at all costs – it is the primary cause of root rot.
- Soil: requires a well-draining, porous mix – ideally a succulent blend with added pumice or perlite (at least 50% inert material).
- Fertilising: from spring to late summer, apply a specific fertiliser for succulents, low in nitrogen and high in potassium, diluted to half strength, once a month.
- Flowering: in late spring, it produces arched floral stems with small bell-shaped flowers in pinkish-orange tones, which rise elegantly above the rosette.
- Did you know? The whitish bloom covering the leaves is an evolutionary adaptation to reflect UV rays and reduce water loss; touching it frequently removes it permanently, affecting the plant’s appearance.
A botanical marvel of timeless charm, easy to care for, yet endlessly rewarding for those who take the time to appreciate its unique beauty.
