Ferocactus emoryi Ø 14

Ferocactus emoryi supplied in an elegant terracotta pot Ø 14 cm from our Manera Line. An iconic plant native to the arid zones of Mexico and Arizona. When young, it has a perfectly globose shape, then (very slowly) tends toward a cylindrical, columnar structure over the years.

Its beauty lies in the chromatic contrast between the opaque glaucous green epidermis and the large areoles from which thick, rigid spines emerge. The central spine, in particular, is robust and hooked downward. When the plant is wet, the spines light up with a breathtaking purplish-red color.

Growing notes:

  • Exposure: full sun, loves bright light.
  • Watering: moderate in spring/summer, almost completely stop in winter; fears waterlogging.
  • Soil type: very well-draining, ideal cactus mix with sand and pumice.
  • Fertilization: once a month in summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
  • Flowering: blooms in summer (mature plant, usually over 20-30 cm tall); funnel-shaped yellow or reddish flowers at the apex.
  • Curiosities: the hook on the central spine helps the plant anchor itself and retain moisture in nature; the name “Ferocactus” means “fierce cactus”.
