Housed in an elegant terracotta pot from our Manera Line, this succulent is far more than a simple plant – it is a masterpiece of natural geometry. Its architectural precision and understated beauty make it one of the most intriguing species in the plant kingdom.

The fleshy, thick leaves, with their dull grey-green hue, are arranged in two opposite rows, creating a visual balance that is both harmonious and captivating. Each leaf ends with an abrupt, flattened truncation – hence the name truncata – and is topped with translucent “windows”. These epidermal structures act as natural lenses, channeling light deep into the inner tissues and enhancing photosynthetic efficiency under intense sunlight.

In the wild, this plant grows almost entirely buried, camouflaging itself among sand and rock debris to reduce water loss and deter herbivores. A survival strategy that only adds to its mysterious, understated charm.

Growing notes

• Exposure: bright light, but avoid direct midday sun; tolerates full morning sun. In low light, leaves tend to elongate and lose their compact form.
• Watering: moderate. Allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to a minimum.
• Substrate: highly draining, using a mix of succulent soil, silica sand, and pumice (ratio 2:1:1).
• Fertilising: from April to September, apply a specific fertiliser for cacti and succulents, diluted to 50% of the recommended strength, once a month.
• Flowering: produces slender, inconspicuous racemose inflorescences with small, tubular greenish-white flowers. Flowering typically occurs in late spring or early summer.

Did you know? The translucent windows are not merely an optical adaptation; they also help prevent tissue overheating by reflecting part of the infrared radiation. In its natural habitat, the plant can remain buried for months, emerging only during the brief rainy seasons.
