Jatropha podagrica Ø 17 cm
Jatropha podagrica, one of the most unusual, spectacular and ornamental caudiciform succulent plants on the planet. Highly sought after by collectors and interior design enthusiasts, this species is a true masterpiece of botanical architecture, combining the solidity of a prehistoric trunk with the delicate charm of bright-coloured flowers. This woody caudex, with its silvery-grey bark, serves in nature as an exceptional water reservoir. On top of the stem grow large, lobed, bright green leaves held on long, flexible petioles. But the magic happens during the growing season: from the centre of the crown emerge majestic stalks bearing branched inflorescences of small coral-red flowers that can last for months.
Cultivation notes:
- Light: full sun or very bright direct light; tolerates partial shade but flowers less.
- Watering: regular in summer (let the substrate dry out between waterings); almost completely stop in winter.
- Soil type: very well-draining, ideal succulent mix with coarse sand, pumice and lava grit.
- Fertilising: once a month in spring/summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser.
- Temperature: never below 10-12°C; ideal temperature 18-28°C.
- Repotting: every 2-3 years, in a pot that is rather wide and not too deep.
It requires little care, loves light and fears waterlogging. Perfect for caudiciform collectors and rare plant lovers.
