The spineless sculpture – pure golden elegance

This extremely rare horticultural selection turns the type species upside down by completely losing its robust spines (nudum/inermis), revealing a smooth, glossy and sculptural epidermis. The true spectacular effect comes from the golden-yellow and cream variegation, which contrasts magnificently with the green background. A totally harmless cactus with a modern design, destined to rank among the most scenic and sought-after. One of the most spectacular and hypnotic mutations.

Growing notes

• Exposure: prefers bright, intense light but fears direct sunlight during the hottest hours, especially on the apical part where the characteristic cephalium forms. A light filter or a bright partial-shade position is ideal.
• Watering: regular but sparing during the warm season, watering only when the substrate is completely dry. In winter, suspend almost entirely, keeping the plant cool and dry.
• Soil type: requires a mineral and extremely well-draining substrate, with an inorganic component (pumice, lapilli, coarse sand) making up at least 60-70% of the volume to prevent root stagnation.
• Fertilising: from spring to late summer, once a month, with a specific cactus fertiliser low in nitrogen and rich in potassium and phosphorus to support cephalium growth and epidermal health.
• Flowers: like all Melocactus, once maturity is reached (after several years), it develops a woolly and bristly cephalium at the apex, from which small pinkish or purplish flowers emerge, followed by red berry-like fruits.
• Did you know? The “nudum” form is a mutation that eliminates spines, making the plant smooth to the touch with a very clean profile. Combined with variegation, it creates a unique colour contrast in the cactus world. In the wild, Melocactus grow on calcareous and rocky terrains in South America, where the mature cephalium makes them easily recognisable.
