Opuntia cochenillifera f. variegata Ø 14

Presented in a refined Ø 14 cm terracotta pot from our Manera Line, this variegated Opuntia cochenillifera stands out as a true living sculpture, capable of transforming any space with its striking presence.

Highly sought after by enthusiasts for its surprising colouration, it features large, fleshy pads with a velvety texture, showcasing an irregular and fascinating variegation: bright green blends with cream and milky-white shades, flaring up to intense pink when touched by sunlight. A play of colours that changes with the light, making it unique and ever-evolving.

Adding to its appeal is a rare quality among opuntias: the almost complete absence of glochids. The smooth, soft-to-the-touch surface makes it pleasant and safe to handle, without losing the strong, earthy character typical of this genus.

Growing notes

  • Exposure: full sun or very bright light. Direct sunlight enhances the pink and cream tones of the variegation.
  • Watering: moderate, only when the substrate is completely dry. Reduce to a minimum in winter. Overwatering is its number one enemy.
  • Soil type: well-draining substrate, ideal for cacti (with sand, pumice or perlite).
  • Fertilising: from spring to summer, with a specific cactus fertiliser, diluted, once a month.
  • Flowering: produces reddish-orange or pink flowers, which appear at the edges of the pads in late spring / summer, if well cared for and properly exposed.
  • Curiosity: the variegation is unstable and each pad can develop different patterns. It has a bushy habit and, in nature, can grow over 2 metres tall.

Easy to care for, it only needs a bright spot and well-drained soil: its only real enemy is excess water. A plant with a Mediterranean soul, perfect for those seeking beauty without fuss.
