Pedilanthus macrocarpus f. crestata Ø 14

Pedilanthus macrocarpus f. crestata (syn. Euphorbia macrocarpa f. crestata) is a very rare mutated variety that fascinates with its fleshy stems transformed into large, sinuous, flat and densely wavy fans. Characterised by an intense green colour due to a thick natural wax, this specimen looks like a limestone sculpture or an emerged coral. A plant of high ornamental value.

Exposure: prefers bright and sunny positions, ideally in the morning or late afternoon. It fears the harshest rays of the central summer hours, which can scorch the waxy cuticle.

Watering: very scarce and spaced out. In spring-summer, water only when the substrate is completely dry. In autumn-winter, suspend almost entirely, limiting to a light misting every 4-6 weeks.

Soil type: needs a well-draining mix poor in organic matter. Ideal: a cactus and succulent compost with added pumice, lapilli or coarse sand (at least 50-60% inert material).

Fertilisation: only during active growth, with a low-nitrogen fertiliser for succulents, diluted to half strength, once a month.

Flowers: produces cyathia in red-orange or yellowish-green, at the tips of the stems, usually in late spring or summer, but flowering in cultivation is occasional.

Hardiness: extremely resilient, it stores large water reserves in its crested tissues, tolerating long periods of total drought.

• Beware of waterlogging: it is the main cause of root rot.
• In winter, protect from frost (minimum 5-8 °C).
• Repot only every 2-3 years, in a shallow and wide pot.
