Portulacaria Namaquensis, considered a true collector’s rarity for its sculptural habit, this species has an extraordinarily ancient and unique appearance, ideal for those seeking a plant with a strong, minimalist character.

Over time it develops a woody, robust trunk that branches into erect stems with characteristic shiny, waxy bark and almost metallic reflections. These stems are covered from top to bottom with a myriad of tiny, fleshy bluish-green leaves that help the plant retain moisture. In spring, if grown in ideal conditions, it produces a profusion of tiny, pretty pink or lilac flowers before its summer dormancy.

Growing notes:

• Exposure: full sun or very bright light; tolerates partial shade but leaf color and flowering benefit from strong light.
• Watering: allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings; reduce drastically in summer (dormancy) and winter.
• Soil type: very well-draining, ideal succulent or cactus mix with coarse sand and pumice.
• Fertilization: once a year in spring with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
• Caution: fears waterlogging and temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
