Tephrocactus articulatus v. calvus Ø 14

Unlike other forms of Tephrocactus articulatus, this variety stands out for its bare and austere surface: the areoles, lacking papery spines or sharp thorns, are reduced to a slight, barely hinted felt. The stem, opaque and with a wrinkled texture, reveals its full material essence.

The plant grows in slightly ovoid segments, overlapping in successive layers, building a sculptural and dynamic silhouette. With the arrival of late spring, the youngest joints may produce delicate flowers, pure white or cream, lit by a yellow heart that contrasts with the sternness of the stem.

Growing notes:

• Exposure: full sun or bright light; tolerates partial shade but flowers less.
• Watering: abundant but infrequent in spring-summer, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. In winter, almost suspend.
• Soil type: well-draining, with coarse sand or perlite and low organic matter. A cactus mix is ideal.
• Fertilizing: once a month during the growing season, with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
• Flowering: late spring – cream-white flowers with a yellow center, short-lived but highly ornamental.
• Curiosity: in nature, the segments easily detach and root, allowing the plant to propagate in an almost “clonal” way. It withstands intense heat but suffers from prolonged frost.

Easy to grow, it requires only a little care: it loves bright light and fears stagnant moisture. A discreet presence, yet with a strong character, capable of enriching any space with personality.
