The Madagascan caudiciform jewel

Uncarina roeoesliana is a remarkable Madagascan caudiciform plant that wins you over at first sight. It quickly develops a woody, sculptural caudex at the base, topped with large, soft, velvety green leaves. From late spring through autumn, it provides a continuous display of bright yellow funnel-shaped flowers that stand out beautifully against the foliage. A true exotic rarity with generous growth, perfect for bonsai lovers and collectors of unusual succulents.

This species belongs to the Pedaliaceae family (the same as sesame) and is one of the few succulents that bloom profusely even when young. Ideal for growing as a miniature tree, it develops flexible branches that can be pruned.

Growing notes:

• Exposure: full sun or very bright light; light afternoon shade in the hottest summer months.
• Watering: regular during spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings; reduce drastically in winter.
• Soil type: well-draining and porous – a cactus mix with added pumice or perlite works best.
• Fertilising: every 15–20 days during the growing season, using a low-nitrogen, potassium-rich fertiliser for succulents.
• Flowers: funnel-shaped, bright yellow with a dark throat; appear from late spring to autumn.
• Fun fact: the seeds have tiny hooks (hence the name “Uncarina”) that cling to animal fur for dispersal.
