A stemless succulent forming compact rosettes of fleshy, thick, emerald-green leaves with a rounded and transparent tip (window) to facilitate underground photosynthesis. The leaf surface is crossed by fine dark longitudinal veins, and each leaf ends with a characteristic whitish apical bristle (hence the name pilifera). The rosette reaches a maximum diameter of 10–12 cm, and the inflorescence is a thin stalk with small white tubular flowers.

In the variegated form, the leaves show irregular streaks or blotches of cream-white, yellow, or pinkish colour, due to a lack of chlorophyll in those areas, while the transparent apical window, dark veins, and terminal bristle remain unchanged.
