The upside-down tree: a living sculpture for collectors

Adansonia digitata is the legendary African Baobab, known as the “Tree of Life“. This highly collectible plant is famous for its massive, sculptural trunk (caudex), which acts as a natural water reservoir, and for its bare winter branches that resemble roots reaching for the sky.

Exposure: thrives in full sun, even several hours of direct light. Indoors, place it near a south-facing window. During summer, it can be moved outdoors in a sunny spot.

Soil & Drainage: requires a very well-draining mix, ideally a cactus/succulent blend with added pumice or lava rock (40% inorganic material). Waterlogging is its worst enemy.

Watering: water deeply but infrequently from spring to late summer, only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering drastically, just a light monthly misting if the caudex shows signs of shriveling.

Fertilizing: during the growing season, apply a liquid fertilizer for succulents with low nitrogen, diluted to half-strength, every 2–3 weeks.

Flowers & Curiosities: mature, well-acclimated plants produce spectacular pendant white flowers in late spring, which open at night and release a delicate melon-like fragrance. In autumn, the plant drops all its leaves (deciduous) and enters a deep winter rest – don’t panic, this is its natural cycle.

Perfect for lovers of unusual plants, it can be grown magnificently in a pot as a caudiciform specimen or trained as a majestic exotic bonsai. The Baobab is a giant of nature that, when potted, becomes a stunning indoor or patio plant while retaining all its unique morphological features.
