The living sculpture with a geometric caudex

Fockea natalensis, a magnificent and sculptural succulent caudiciform plant, highly sought after by collectors for its geometric charm. It develops a large, tuberous, woody caudex covered in reddish bark, from which climbing stems emerge. Its true stylistic signature lies in its glossy leaves – bright green on the upper side and a striking purple‑burgundy underneath. Perfect for lovers of exotic rarities.

Native to the coastal and hilly regions of eastern South Africa, this Fockea is famous for its extraordinary ability to store water in its impressive root system, turning into a true natural sculpture over the years. In summer, it produces small but fascinating star‑shaped flowers in yellowish tones.

Exposure: thrives in very bright positions, with direct morning or late‑afternoon sun. During the hottest summer hours, light shading is recommended to prevent leaf scorch.

Watering: during the growing season (spring–summer), water regularly but moderately, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In autumn, gradually reduce watering; in winter, withhold water almost entirely, keeping the soil just barely moist.

Soil type: requires an extremely well‑draining mix, composed of universal potting soil, coarse sand, and pumice (or perlite) in equal parts, with a bit of volcanic grit to enhance drainage.

Fertilising: from April to September, apply a liquid fertiliser for succulents, diluted to one‑third of the recommended strength, every 3‑4 weeks. Cease completely in autumn and winter.

Flowering: in midsummer, small star‑shaped flowers appear, yellowish‑green in colour – discreet yet very decorative. Flowering is encouraged by a well‑respected winter rest period.

Did you know? The caudex of this plant can reach impressive sizes in the wild, exceeding one metre in diameter. In cultivation, it is common practice to gradually raise the caudex above soil level, revealing it like a true botanical jewel.

Slow but steady‑growing, this is a long‑lived plant that requires little care: it only fears waterlogging and frost. Perfect for containers, it is rewarding even for beginners, as long as it is given a dry, cool winter.
