Mestoklema tuberosum : This plant is loved for its powerful caudex, which emerges from the soil with the sculptural presence of an ancient relic, as if it were a small work of art shaped by time. From the sturdy stem springs an airy canopy of tiny, linear leaves that bring lightness to the whole.

Exposure: it enjoys bright light, including direct sun during the cooler hours (morning and late afternoon). In summer, light shading during the central hours is appreciated to prevent scorching. Indoors, place it in front of a south- or southeast-facing window.

Watering: water only when the substrate is completely dry, even deep down (check with a wooden stick). In winter, withhold water almost entirely, only lightly moistening every 4–6 weeks if the caudex shows signs of shriveling. Caution: waterlogging is lethal and causes rapid root rot.

Soil type: needs a very well-draining mix, with coarse sand, pumice, and volcanic grit in equal parts. A cactus and succulent potting mix is ideal, optionally amended with 40% perlite to increase drainage.

Fertilization: from spring to late summer, with a liquid fertilizer for succulents, diluted to half strength, once a month. Stop completely in autumn and winter.

Flowering: in midsummer, it is adorned with a multitude of tiny, brightly colored flowers (golden-yellow or deep pink), resembling miniature daisies, blooming generously among the foliage, offering a delicate and lively spectacle. To encourage flowering, ensure at least 6 hours of direct light daily.

Interesting fact: the caudex can reach considerable size over the years (up to 20–30 cm in diameter), and each specimen develops unique shapes, making it a true collector’s item. In the wild, it grows in South Africa, where it endures long droughts and poor, rocky soils.

Practical tips:

• Repot every 2–3 years in spring, using a perforated pot, preferably terracotta.
• Avoid touching or injuring the caudex: scars are permanent.
• If temperatures drop below 5°C, protect the plant in a greenhouse or indoors.
• Propagation is by seed or stem cuttings, but growth is slow.

Easy to grow, Mestoklema requires very little attention: an ideal choice for those who want beauty without complications.
