Pachypodium horombense Ø 14

Presented in a refined terracotta pot Ø 14 cm from our exclusive Manera Line, this specimen of Pachypodium horombense embodies the most fascinating and decorative essence of the entire Pachypodium genus.

Native to the harsh rocky highlands of Madagascar, where life struggles between stone and blazing sun, this botanical jewel is much more than a succulent: it is a living sculpture, a natural work of art that wins over discerning collectors with its harmoniously compact habit and its generous blooms.

Unlike columnar species, which stretch upward vertically, Pachypodium horombense develops a low, massive, swollen basal caudex, from which short, erect, deliberately irregular branches radiate, almost carved by the wind. The real magic, however, unfolds during flowering: long peduncles support large bell-shaped flowers of a bright golden yellow, surprisingly large compared to the plant, with an unusually expanded profile – even more showy and spectacular than that of many other species in the genus.

Growing notes

• Exposure: full sun or very bright light; tolerates direct sun, but protect during the hottest hours in summer if grown under glass.
• Watering: abundant but infrequent from spring to autumn, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to almost nothing.
• Soil type: well-draining and mineral-based, with coarse sand, pumice, and lava grit; slightly acidic to neutral pH.
• Fertilisation: from April to September, using a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser diluted to half strength, every 15–20 days.
• Flowering: occurs in late spring – summer (May–July in the northern hemisphere). Flowers last about a week and are visited by nocturnal pollinators in habitat.
• Interesting fact: the caudex stores water for long drought periods. In the wild, it grows on granite outcrops, often leaning, following the light. It is a protected and rare species in cultivation.
