Pachypodium horombense is a succulent plant endemic to Madagascar, highly prized for its distinctive bottle-shaped trunk and showy yellow flowers. Here are its main features in brief.

Origin and appearance

Origin: it is native to the Horombe plateau in south-central Madagascar, where it grows on rocky granite outcrops between 500 and 1000 metres above sea level.
Habit: it is a small succulent shrub that can reach about 1.5 metres in height.
Caudex and stem: its most distinctive feature is the caudex, a swollen, fleshy stem at the base that acts as a water reservoir. From this smooth, greyish-green trunk, short, thorny, twisted branches emerge.
Spines: the stem and branches are covered with short, paired spines.
Leaves: rosettes of thick, elliptical, dark green and glossy leaves grow at the tips of the branches. The plant is deciduous: it loses its leaves during the dry season or in winter.
Flowers: it produces large, showy yellow bell-shaped (or cup-shaped) flowers, measuring up to 5.5 cm. The corolla is characterised by five “pockets” at the base.
Inflorescence: flowers appear in late spring and summer, borne on long stems that rise above the foliage.
