Pedilanthus macrocarpus f. crestata Ø 17

Pedilanthus macrocarpus f. crestata (syn. Euphorbia macrocarpa f. crestata) – a very rare crested mutant, fascinating for its fleshy stems transformed into large, sinuous, flat and densely undulating fans.

Its intense green colour, due to a thick natural wax, makes it look like a limestone sculpture or an emerged coral. A highly ornamental plant, extremely resilient, it stores large water reserves in its crested tissues and tolerates long periods of total drought.

Growing notes:

• Exposure: full sun or very bright light; tolerates partial shade but loses compactness and colour.
• Watering: abundant but infrequent in summer (every 10–14 days), almost completely withheld in winter. Allow the substrate to dry out between waterings.
• Soil: well‑draining, poor, sandy or cactus mix, with added pumice or perlite (40–50% inert material).
• Fertilising: once a month in spring‑summer with a low‑nitrogen, high‑potassium and high‑phosphorus cactus fertiliser.
• Flowers: in late spring – small reddish‑orange cyathia at the stem tips, not showy but decorative.
• Caution: the latex is toxic and irritating; handle with gloves and wash hands after contact.
