A living mosaic of unique colors

This extraordinary grafted variegated form stands out for its globular body, free of classic spines, featuring a hypnotic mosaic of colors blending olive green, dark purple, cream yellow, and pink. Native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia, the standard species is already known for its dark violet tones, but this extremely rare variegated selection elevates the plant’s aesthetics to a whole new level. The partial lack of chlorophyll creates incredible chromatic contrasts, where each individual “head” develops completely unique and unrepeatable patterns and shades of yellow and pink.

Exposure: prefers bright but filtered light. Direct sun during the hottest hours can burn the chlorophyll-free areas; place it in a bright spot with morning or evening sun, or provide light shade during midday.

Watering: very moderate. In spring/summer, water only when the substrate is completely dry; in autumn/winter, reduce watering almost to zero. Being grafted, it is even more sensitive to waterlogging – pay attention to the rootstock’s roots.

Soil type: extremely well-draining and mineral-rich. Use a cactus mix with coarse sand, pumice, and lapilli, with at least 70% inorganic components. The pot should be small, with drainage holes, preferably terracotta.

Fertilization: from April to September, use a specific cactus fertilizer, low in nitrogen and high in potassium and phosphorus, diluted to half strength every 3-4 weeks. Variegated forms need less nitrogen to avoid stressing their reduced metabolism.

Flowers: in late spring, it produces large, vivid magenta flowers that emerge directly from the base of the plant. The contrast between the variegated body and the brilliant blooms is an unforgettable spectacle.

Fun fact: in the wild, it grows at over 3,000 meters of altitude, enduring night frosts. The variegation makes every specimen unique – no two plants are alike. Grafting onto a vigorous rootstock makes cultivation easier, making it hardier than the rooted form.
